Loft Conversion, Basement Conversion or Garage Conversion?
Why not convert your Attic or Cellar into a more Useful Space!
Increase Your Living Space By Having a Garage Conversion!
Welcome to Home Conversions Online the internet guide to home conversions. This website has been developed to provide useful guidance, information and advice on Loft Conversions, Basement Conversions and Garage Conversions. Afterall, why should you need to move out when you can move up, down or sideways. The Attic or Cellar could provide you with that extra space and the conversion costs could be a fraction of the costs associated with moving house.
Loft conversions and Basement conversions are becoming more popular due to the uncertainty over house prices, mortgage rates and the high hidden costs of moving (solicitors fees, estate agents fees etc). Many people choose to have a conversion because they want more space but like the house or area they are already live in. Garage Conversions are also becoming popular with more and more people prefering to change a garage's purpose from that of storing a car to one of providing another useful linving space. For more information and advice visit the following sections within our site Loft Conversions, Basement Conversions and Garage Conversions.
Loft Conversions
With a loft conversion, the space is used for bedrooms, studies or bathrooms, it is therefore important to have a good heating system in place and put the right kind of insulation in. Information and advice about whether or not your loft is suitable for a conversion can be found in the Loft Conversion section of this site. We have also included relevant details about heating a loft conversion and in particular underfloor heating as well as information from Kingspan Insulation for Insulating a loft conversion both of which can be found on the heating and insulation pages of this website.

The space in a loft or attic can be as much as 30% of the total floor area of the home. It usually only contains a cold water storage cistern and chimney stack. In almost all cases it is wasted space that can be turned into habitable space. If the attic is used for storage there is no need to lose all of this storage space as some attic space can be retained. As the main fabric of the building is already there, a loft conversion or cellar conversion is often cheaper than extending your home outwards (between £8000 and £25000 on average). It could increase the value of your home by 10% to 20%. In addition you often do not need planning permission for a loft conversion or basement conversion. For more information about planning and building regulations see our Planning page in this section and Council Links in the main planning section.
Basement Conversions
Basements are close enough to the ground floor area to be used as playrooms, living rooms, kitchens or accommodation for relatives. With the demands of modern lifestyles, basements are increasingly being turned into leisure areas with home cinemas, pool and table tennis tables, home gyms or even swimming pools. You can also create an independent entrance or exit out into the back garden from the basement. Further details and advice about waterproofing a basement and converting it can be found within the Basement Conversion section of this website.
Back to Basement and Midland Tanking are our featured Basement Conversion Companies on this site.
Garage Conversions
Garage Conversions are becoming increasingly popular with more and more people prefering to change a garage's purpose from that of storing a car to one of providing another useful living space. Houses with a double garage have the option of retaining one for the use of a car and the other as an extra new room.
The most common use is for a study area whether it be for the business dealings of the parent working from home or the children having a dedicated place to study homework. Other uses are a playroom, ground floor bedroom, separate dining room (especially if the house has a lounge/dinning room) or an annex for use with an elderly relative.
Shropshire Garage Conversions are our featured company in this section of our site.
We have included alot of information about Planning permission, Building regulations, Considerations to take into account including some thoughts about Heating, Insulation, and Loft and Basement stairs.
If you would like to find out more about financing a project like this, visit our section on Finance.
A basement conversion is more straightforward if there is an existing cellar, but this is not always necesssary and an extra room can often be built even when there is no existing basement.
